Collegiate athletics came to a halt in mid-March. With social distancing, remote work schedules and the inability to gather to cheer on our favorite teams, came a void. The void of seeing our favorite teams compete; the void of watching our favorite student-athletes grow and improve.
Florida Atlantic athletics recognizes that void and has seized the opportunity by providing an opportunity for fans to get to know the FAU athletes and coaches in a series called "Owl Letters." It is just one of the #WinningInParadise series that FAUSports.com will bring to you, our loyal fans.
Dear Volleyball,
I am truly grateful that as a 10-year old little girl I decided to start playing volleyball, following my big sister Odille's example. She started playing two years before me. Ever since, you have given me the opportunity to play next to Odille and we developed the relationship that we have today.
In my entire life, I never thought I would ever accomplish this much. Now, looking back to my 12-year volleyball career.
It's super funny how "sports" can imitate life so well sometimes; and how God used it in such a significant way in my personal life to reveal so much to me.
I started my "volleyball career" with very low self-esteem and I have used every success/award/title along the way as an escape to make me feel "special" or "significant!"
But not until the day I chose to completely surrender my life to God and realized that "no matter what": I am significant. As a matter of fact, we ALL are!
Today, I can walk with confidence. I know who I am and don't feel like I have anything to prove to anyone. But more so, I want to make sure that I make a POSITIVE impact on everyone that I come in contact with.
I now can play volleyball completely from the HEART, with PASSION and with the LOVE that I have for this game and to truly ENJOY it, without any pressure!
I have acknowledged that when you play for yourself, you can be great, but when you play for something bigger than yourself, that's when something extraordinary happens.
I have learned that in a team it is NOT about the strength of the "individual" players, but it is about the strength of the "unit" and how well they all function together.
You taught me that each and every player adds something unique to the team and that there is no reason to compare yourself with other players from your team or those of others. Instead, we need to build each other up, learn from each other and help each other reach their full potential.
Volleyball, you taught me that it is so much more than a game, but it is about getting to know yourself as a person, what your strengths and weaknesses are, having "character," the spirit of "excellence" and "unity," the people who become family and the amazing long-lasting memories.
Volleyball, because of you I was privileged to travel many parts of this world, while competing in international tournaments with the Suriname National Team, and I've been able to acknowledge so many beautiful natures and different cultures.
As a simple young lady from the small country of Suriname who decided to step out of her comfort zone, I truly thank God that about three years ago, He led me to make one of the best decisions of my entire life to come to the USA and go to school at FAU to play volleyball and to study!
I cannot be more grateful for Coach
Fernanda Nelson who made this all possible and made such a big impact in my life right off the bat. We are still together with the rest of the awesome FAU staff!
I am blessed to have been part of the FAU volleyball team with the most amazing, funniest and genuine group of girls, who always brightened my day!!
My FAU college volleyball career is now over after four incredible years and looking back I see how God made me to grow into this strong young woman with great FAITH!
Thank you to everyone who supported me and will continue to do so on this beautiful volleyball journey. I am super grateful for those of you who stood beside me throughout all the ups and downs and always prayed for me.
Words cannot describe how grateful I am for everyone and especially for you VOLLEYBALL!!
I can't believe that I am standing in front of the end of my senior year. I am so excited to see what God has in store for me next! I have learned and grown so much and will continue to do so!
I have hope for a greater tomorrow and future and I am excited to continue to apply everything volleyball has taught me for the rest of my life. My goal is to make a big impact in this world, help others unlock the gifts that they have trapped inside, and to share God's LOVE everywhere I go.
My recent and forever approach in playing you (volleyball) will be making sure to "SERVE" my team well and to be fearless.
"Truly great people influence others, so that they 'too' can become GREAT!"
❤THANK YOU VOLLEYBALL❤
Thank you FAU!!
Thank you SURINAME!!
Thank you GOD!!
