Capri Grotowski was named head coach of the FAU sand volleyball program in the summer of 2014. She quickly turned the program into a national powerhouse, ranking as high as No. 8 in the national polls and a perennial top-25 team.
Â
The Sandy Owls are coming off an historic 2022 season, finishing the year with a program record 23 wins and the program’s first NCAA Championship appearance. As the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Owls knocked off ninth-seed Stanford in the opening round, 3-0, marking the team’s first NCAA Tournament win. FAU advanced to the Elite 8 and finished the season with the program’s first single digit national ranking, coming in at No. 8 in the AVCA and CBVB national polls.
Â
As an inaugural member of Conference USA, FAU earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament after finishing the regular season with a 21-8 record. The Owls swept all postseason awards, highlighted by Grotowski being named C-USA Coach of the Year. Erica Brok/Mackenzie Morris were tabbed Pair of the Year and Julie Honzovicova was recognized as Freshman of the Year. Pairs Brok/Morris and Marketa Svozilova/Courtney Moon were named to the C-USA First Team Pairs and Honzovicova and Svozilova were All-Freshman recipients. Grotowski’s team earned four C-USA Pair of the Week honors, led by Brok/Morris’ two weekly awards.
Â
More national attention came to the Owls with Brok/Morris earning their second-consecutive AVCA First Team All-America honors in 2022. The pair, who ended their career with an FAU record 95 wins as a pair, also earned their third AVCA Top Flight selection award. On the coaching side of things, her assistant and husband Steve Grotowski, was honored as the AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year.
Grotowski took the Owls to new heights in 2021. She led FAU to its then-highest AVCA rank (No. 11) and its first CCSA Championship. Grotowski also cleared the 100-win mark in a 3-2 victory over North Florida on April 9. Under Grotowski, Brok/Morris earned AVCA First Team All-America status, All-CCSA, AVCA Top Flight honors and CCSA and AVCA Pair of the Week midseason. Brok/Morris, already the winningest pair in team history, moved to first and second all-time, respectively in FAU individuals wins in 2021.
The year 2020 saw the Owls earn an 11-1 record and were on a 10-match winning streak before COVID-19 brought the season to an early end. Despite the abrupt end to the season, FAU ended the year with their then-highest ever rankings in both the DiG Magazine (10th) and AVCA (12th) final national polls.
The Sandy Owls notched 13 wins in 2019, with sophomores Brok/Morris (No. 2) and seniors Amanda Silva/Nicole Grant (No. 3) earning AVCA Top Flight Awards. Brok/Morris set the school record for career wins as a pair and also became the first pair in school history to win CCSA Pair of the Week. FAU achieved success off the court as well, achieving a perfect APR, having 14 players make the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and senior Carly Scarbrough being named to the CCSA All-Academic Team for the second year in a row.
FAU continued their success in 2018, going 18-15, posting back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in program history. The freshmen duo of Brok/Morris went 25-7 on the year, sharing the CCSA Freshman of the Year Award in the process. The award would be the first of several accolades for the pair’s career. Scarbrough made the CCSA All-Academic Team and along with Brittany Pellitteri, Morris and Jessalyn Kinlaw played in the National Pairs Championships. FAU ended the season ranked No. 14 nationally.
The Sandy Owls turned a corner in the 2017 season, winning a then school record 21 matches, including 18 in a row. FAU defeated four nationally ranked teams during the streak and almost added a fifth, losing a 3-2 decision to No. 3 UCLA to end the streak. At the CCSA tournament, the Sandy Owls advanced to the semifinals. The team's top pair of Jessalyn Kinlaw and Megan Rice were named to the CCSA All-Conference Team and were invited to take part in the National Pairs Championships.
In 2016, the program's upward trend continued, notching four more dual match victories that it had the previous season and joined the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA). The tandem of Delaney Clesen and Gabrielle Dischler became the first pair in school history to be named AVCA All-Americans.
In her first season as FAU's head coach, Grotowski led the Owls to a 9-6 dual match record in 2015, tripling the dual match win total from the previous season. Her leadership helped Brittany Pellitteri and Andrea Galinis win the Gold bracket at the Fiesta on Siesta Key Tournament.
A graduate of Lake Worth High School, Grotowski attended Keiser University, then named Northwood University. She was named team MVP all four seasons, as an indoor player. After being named an all-conference outside hitter as a sophomore, she moved inside to middle blocker and earned all-conference honors there in each of the next two seasons.
After completing her degree in 2006, Grotowkski chose to focus on sand volleyball. She played on several local tours and had numerous top-three Open finishes, including more than 25 career wins. In 2009, she qualified for an AVP tournament for the first time and played on tour for the next two years. After taking a year off for the birth of her son, Grotowski returned to the beach and recorded a top-10 finish.
As a coach, Grotowski began coaching a local beach club in 2006, before starting VB Beach, a sand volleyball training club for juniors and adults, with her husband, 2012 sand volleyball Olympian Steve Grotowski. The couple has two kids, son, Cayd, and daughter, Kyah.
