Collegiate athletics came to a halt in mid-March. With social distancing, remote work schedules and the inability to gather to cheer on our favorite teams, came a void. The void of seeing our favorite teams compete; the void of watching our favorite student-athletes grow and improve.
Â
Florida Atlantic athletics recognizes that void and has seized the opportunity by providing an opportunity for fans to get to know the FAU athletes and coaches in a series called "Owl Letters." It is just one of the #WinningInParadise series that FAUSports.com will bring to you, our loyal fans.
Dear Basketball,
Â
Wow. It has been a long time coming, where do I even begin? It's crazy to think that about 17 years ago I first decided to pick you up for myself and not just being forced into a gym that Dad was in. From the very beginning you were a force that continued to strengthen my relationship with my Dad. But over the years you also strengthened me. I can't even begin to imagine how many times I've had to say "ahhh sorry can't I have basketball?" or all the things people claimed I missed out on for wanting to be with you. You've given me so many opportunities and taken me to countless places. You've blessed me with so many friends who've turned into family, and dreams that have become a reality. You have always been by my side throughout seemingly my whole life. Of course things haven't always been easy, we have gone through our fair share of downs together, but I wouldn't trade any of it for anything in the world.Â
Â
Through each and every game, you taught me how to be a student of you. These past four years you taught me a lot, but no year compares to the past year alone. Throughout this year, all of the early morning, long days, and late nights of nitpicking the film sessions, tiring workouts, and nagging tweaks… they all brought me closer to you. Because of you and the connection we built, I've become a well-accomplished student. Not just of you, but in the classroom and of life as well. I am grateful for the lessons that you have taught me. The first that I've learned at a young age being… "If you want to be great at something, there's a choice you have to make." What I mean by that is, there are inherent sacrifices that come along with that. We all have a choice to be great at whatever our heart desires, but it never ends there. We made a choice to get closer to our goals or further away every single day that we wake up and we will always continue to make a choice inevitably. Sometimes the choices may seem hard, but sacrifices will always have to be made. In life, it's up to us to determine what's worth it to us, and what's not.Â
Â
The second lesson you've taught me is the power of my mind. I remember times in my career when things just didn't seem to be going as planned, but I also remember the day that I decided I would rise. Kobe (Bryant) once said, "We all have self-doubt. You don't deny it, but you also don't capitulate to it. You embrace it." I've learned that embracing your insecurities and channeling them into a stronger desire is an important skill for life. Don't stress and become anxious, but instead take action to become better. My Dad used to always tell me about the power of the mind, but you showed me firsthand.Â
Â
And finally, you taught me how to love myself for me. To know that although there are things that I can work on, I should still be confident and proud about everything that I bring to the table and about everything that I have to offer. You showed me that I don't have to be anyone other than myself to accomplish all that I desire. And that no one else has to believe in it but me. Â
Â
Thank you for all of the countless people you have given me to look up to. The people who paved the way, and the people who were examples for the world that all things are possible with determination, sacrifice, love, and a ball.Â
Â
As of now, the corona pandemic has put the world on pause, but I am grateful to know that you will continue to bless me with a professional career in the future. Even though this brings me much excitement, I will surely miss the time I have spent with you in college and the memories that we have shared from the ACC, to the SEC, and of course back home at FAU. Over 17 years, you have undoubtedly shaped me into the woman that I am today and will continue to shape me into the woman that God has intended for me to be over the years.
