Collegiate athletics came to a halt in mid-March. With social distancing, remote work schedules and the inability to gather to cheer on our favorite teams, came a void. The void of seeing our favorite teams compete; the void of watching our favorite student-athletes grow and improve.
Florida Atlantic athletics recognizes that void and has seized the opportunity by providing an opportunity for fans to get to know the FAU athletes and coaches in a series called "Owl Letters." It is just one of the #WinningInParadise series that FAUSports.com will bring to you, our loyal fans.
Good Afternoon Owls Fans,
We are all trying to cope with a new normal and wrap our heads around such an unprecedented event.
Â
I know baseball and sport take a backseat to what is going on in the world, but that is my world. My heart aches for all the students and coaches that worked tremendously hard for this season, a season that just vanished.
Â
I've been thinking about the kid who was going to get to play his or her first Little League game and will now have to wait until next year. I think about the number of great moments we all would remember for a lifetime that didn't happen, or should I say haven't happened yet.
Â
Please indulge me why I say a few thank yous.
Â
I know with the amount of uncertainty that surrounds all aspect of collegiate life, college athletics, the draft, and summer ball, our players have been awesome. They have continued to take care of their schoolwork and have tried to stay in shape, I salute you and say THANK YOU.
Â
To our tremendously loyal fans that have been concerned not that there is no baseball, but about the well-being of our players and families, I say THANK YOU.
Â
To all the administrators that have worked tirelessly to assure the health and welfare of everyone. In addition, the amount of work that has gone into budget forecasting and conversations about the future, I say THANK YOU.
Â
To our campus community, I know it would have been real easy to close up shop and leave, but you have remained open to help the students, I say THANK YOU.
Â
Lastly and most importantly, our health care workers. Young people if you are looking for a hero look no further than your local doctors, nurses, and health care workers. They show up every day knowingly putting themselves in harm's way for the betterment of humanity. To say THANK YOU is just not enough. And, one more thank you that needs extending is to the law enforcement and national guard. Many of their tasks goes unnoticed but they are always there.
Â
Please keep the faith and do the right things until this situation has passed. We will eventually get back to life as we know it, until then stay safe, keep your family close and help where you can.
Â
John
