FAU Baseball Knocks off UALR 4-3

Little Rock, AR - Daniel Cook's two-out RBI single in the fourth inning plated Alex Silversmith for the eventual go-ahead run. Jeff Beliveau pitched six innings of work to get his first win of the year as Florida Atlantic University defeated the University of Arkansas at Little Rock 4-3 at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock on Sunday.
The Owls got on the board for three runs in the first on five hits, all with two outs. After a single by William Block, Mike McKenna connected on his fourth homer of the season over the right-field fence to make the score 2-0. Then, after a Tom Hatcher double, Travis Ozga singled to left to score Hatcher and give Beliveau a 3-0 cushion.
Beliveau went six innings for FAU, gave up seven hits, three earned runs, walked four batters and struck out seven. He got out of a jam in the third inning, when UALR put runners on first and second with nobody out, Greg McCarthy hit into an infield fly rule out. Silversmith allowed the ball to hit the turf and caught Eric Hanlon between second and third. Hanlon broke for third where he was tagged out by Daniel Cook to end the threat.
UALR sliced into FAU's 4-1 lead with a single run in the fifth and sixth. The last of those runs came on a Brad Swiderski solo home run to cut the lead to 4-3. That's when the bullpen came in to shut the door on the Trojans.
Adam Morrison gave up a hit but still pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Mickey Storey retired the side in the eighth inning after giving up an early walk. In the ninth, Alex Pepe struck out the first two batters swinging, then gave way to Mike Gipson who picked up his first save of the year with a three-pitch strikeout of Zach Rowles to end the game. In all the bullpen gave up just one hit through three innings.
William Block had a stellar offensive day for FAU (7-4, 1-0 Sun Belt). He went three for five with a double and a run scored. Alex Silversmith went two for three and scored a run in the fourth-inning on Daniel Cook's RBI single. All four FAU runs came with two men out in the inning.
Ashur Tolliver got the loss for UALR (2-9, 0-1 SBC). Tolliver gave up four runs and eight hits through five innings, he falls to 0-1.
FAU returns to action on Tuesday night as they face the University of South Florida in Tampa at 7 p.m.
