Baseball Splits with Gardner-Webb

In a Friday Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader, Florida Atlantic University earned a split with Gardner-Webb University with an 11-5 win in game two to rebound from a 7-4 loss in game one. FAU used a six run eighth inning to improve to 20-17 (6-8 A-Sun), while the Bulldogs fall to 17-17 (7-7 A-Sun)
Despite home runs from Travis Ozga and Jordan Hafer, FAU found itself trailing 5-4 heading into the eighth inning in game two. GWU reliever, Jonathon Ban (1-2) had retired the first six batters he faced before Tyler Stevens started the eighth inning with a single to right field. Justin Martin stepped to the plate three batters later and plated two of his five RBI on the day.
Anthony Albano got into the mix with a two-run double, followed by an RBI single by Hafer and an RBI double by by Alex Silversmith to put FAU up 10-5. Ovy Ramirez capped of the day with a home run in the ninth inning.
Joel Schmal improved to 5-2 on the season after he pitched four inning and held GWU scoreless despite two hits. The junior struck out two.
In game one of the series, Josh Drewery (1-0) pitched a perfect game until right fielder Anthony Albano stepped to the plate in the fifth inning. The Chicago, IL native was down in the count but battled with four foul balls before depositing the ball over the right field fence for his second home run of the season.
FAU's Mickey Storey (4-6) held the GWU offense in check in the first five innings and only allowed one hit before the Bulldogs offense ignited in the sixth with four hits off of the sophomore. Joey Testa and Tyler Johnson started the inning with hits and Daniel Cooke drove home the first run of the game with a single. A ground out recorded the first out of the game before Gardner-Webb loaded the bases for Matt Higginson. Higginson gave the Bulldogs a 6-1 lead with a bases-clearing double.
In the eighth inning, the Owls offense tried to counter as the first five batters reached base. Pinch hitter Justin Martin drove home two of the three runs in the inning with a single down the left field line but FAU could not overcome the deficit.
