MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Six late runs propelled the Florida Atlantic softball team past Memphis to a 7-4 win on Saturday afternoon, clinching the series.
The Owls (31-17, 12-11) overcame a 4-1 deficit against the Tigers (17-35, 5-18), scoring six in the fifth and sixth innings. Graduate pitcher
Ainsley Lambert was the hero in the circle, checking in relief and allowing just one run in the final five frames to earn the win.
THE BEGINNING
It was the Tigers who struck first in the bottom of the first inning on a two-RBI double, but junior outfielder
Ciara Gibson countered in the top of the second with an RBI double of her own.
Another Memphis run scored in the bottom frame off a single, but further damage was prevented with a tag out at home to keep the score at 3-1.
THE TURNING POINT
Lambert entered the game in the third and struck out three consecutive batters. The Tigers grew their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch
The Owls rallied in the top of the fifth with three runs to tie the game. Back-to-back RBI singles from senior third baseman
Jesiana Mora and redshirt junior outfielder
Kylie Hammonds was followed by a sacrifice fly game-tying run by sophomore
Lily Holtje.
THE FINISH
With two outs on the board in the top of the sixth, Florida Atlantic had runners on the corners when Hammonds' third hit of the day scored two. On the next at-bat, senior catcher
Chloe Yeatts had an RBI single to extend the Owls' lead to 7-4.
Lambert delivered a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth and struck out the final batter in the bottom of the seventh for the win and the series.
NOTES/NOTABLE
- With three singles on the day, Hammonds extends her team lead in multi-hit games to 17. She finished the outing with three RBI.
- Gibson has tallied 21 RBI in her last 19 games.
- Sophomore outfielder Bella Foran has five runs through two games in the series.
- Freshman Lily Lowery came off the bench and recorded a hit while scoring twice.
- Lambert's six strikeouts are her season high.
