MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Florida Atlantic softball fell 4-3 in Sunday's series finale against Memphis on a walk-off home run.
The Owls (31-18, 12-12) carried a 3-1 lead into the final frame against the Tigers (18-35, 6-18). Two straight hits led to one run scoring, and with two outs on the board, a two-run homer prevented FAU from sweeping the series.
Senior pitcher
Autumn Courtney entered in relief in the third inning and was effective with four strikeouts but ultimately took the loss to move to 16-9 on the season.
THE BEGINNING
Back-to-back singles by sophomore outfielder
Bella Foran and senior third baseman
Jesiana Mora opened the game for the Owls, but a double play halted a run from scoring.
A lead-off triple from Memphis in the bottom of the third led to a sacrifice fly RBI for the 1-0 advantage.
THE TURNING POINT
The Owls used their base running prowess in the fourth and fifth innings to score three runs without tallying a single hit. After a hit-by-pitch and two walks loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, the first FAU run came home on a throwing error, and then a go-ahead run scored on a double steal. Another double steal led to a run in the top of the fifth to put Florida Atlantic up 3-1.
Memphis juiced the bases in the bottom of the fourth, but Courtney delivered two straight outs to end the inning.
THE FINISH
The Owls notched a single, Foran's second of the game, at the top of the seventh. She advanced to third base but was ultimately retired.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers threatened with consecutive hits, leading to a run. Courtney recorded the second out of the inning with a swinging strikeout before the wall-off two-run shot was launched to deep left field.
