BOCA RATON, Fla. – On Saturday and Sunday, the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team is one of 60 top teams across the nation taking part in ITA Kick-off Weekend. The Owls will head to Fort Worth, Texas, took be a part of a four-team bracket hosted by TCU.
Fifteen teams across the nation were chosen as host sites based on Oracle/ITA rankings at the end of 2018-19. The remaining teams in each bracket were determined via a draft process. The Owls will play TCU on Saturday, currently ranked No. 8, after the completion of Notre Dame and Arizona (both receiving votes in the latest Oracle/ITA poll). The following day is the consolation and championship.
Owls' Week in Review
The Owls (2-3) split last weekend at home, defeating ETSU and falling to USF. Freshman
Filip Krolo has picked up a couple of singles wins in his young career, including against the Bucs in the former match.
Alvaro Fernandez Horta has a singles victory plus two more in doubles.
Owls' Week in Preview
All three of the potential opponents for the Owls were NCAA Tournament participants a year ago, with final rankings of No. 10 for TCU, No. 29 Notre Dame and No. 30 Arizona.
TCU (1-0) has one win under their belt, taking the season opener last Saturday over Arizona State. The Horned Frogs have three ranked singles players – Alastair Gray (No. 51), Luc Fomba (No. 100) and Jacob Feamley (No. 119) – and Gray and Feamley combine to be the No. 29-ranked doubles duo as well.
Notre Dame (1-1) began their season with a loss to Kentucky before rebounding with a win over Purdue. The Fighting Irish features the No. 5 Division I player, Richard Ciamarra, along with Axel Nefve (ranked No. 102). Ciamarra and Tristan McCormick slot No. 15 in doubles.
Arizona (4-0) has begun the year undefeated, including a doubleheader sweep this past Sunday. Like TCU, the Wildcats have three singles players in the rankings: No. 36 Filip Malbasic, No. 61 Jonas Ziverts and No. 86 Alejandro Requant-Bicardi.
