TULSA, Okla. – The Florida Atlantic men's tennis team was defeated 4-1 by Charlotte in the American Conference Championship quarterfinals on Friday afternoon in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The #7 Owls season comes to an end with a record of 9-12. It was the second time in as many weeks that the #2 49ers have bested FAU. Charlotte improved to 15-7 and advances to the league's Saturday semifinal
THE BEGINNING
The Owls uncharacteristically dropped the doubles point to open the match. Lucca Pignaton / Vanja Hodzic recorded a 6-4 win on court #3. Charlotte captured court #1 and then saw FAU's court #2 duo fall 7-5, which gave the 49ers the best-of-three matches and the doubles point.
THE MIDDLE
Charlotte moved the score to 2-0 with a win on the top court, but sophomore Pignato halved the margin with a straight set 6-4, 6-3 win on court #6. Junior Simon Myslivec captured his first set and fought back on court #5 to even the set at 5-5, broke his opponent's serve for a 6-5 lead only to see Charlotte win a break to even the second set score at 6-6. Charlotte would eventually and had the opportunity to serve for the match. Charlotte evened the set at 6-6 to get back on serve and earn the set win, making it one-set all.
In the meantime, sophomore Jan Kusy came from one set down and a 4-4 tie in the second set to split sets at 2-6, 6-4 and force a third set. A third set was on hand on court #3 when Charlotte won the second set tiebreaker, 7-4 on court #5, to push a third set there as well.
