BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's golf team turned in record performances throughout the three-day 2019 Pat Bradley Invitational, hosted by FIU at Lakewood Ranch Golf Club.
The Owls bookended a 290, the third lowest team score in program history, by shooting 285 in the first round (which tied for the program's second lowest round in program history) and two days later, proving they were no fluke by shooting 285 once again. FAU posted an 860 for the tournament, which is by far the lowest team score in program history. In the Pat Bradley tournament alone, FAU shattered the previous three year's team scores (2016: 934 (+70), 2017: 938 (+38), 2018: 899 (+35)). The Owls finished second in the 17-team field, behind Stetson by four strokes, and bested three Florida schools and two Conference USA foes.
The team's success could not have happened without outstanding individual play, as the 42nd Annual Pat Bradley Invitational medalist was FAU freshman
Justine Fournand. Fournand shot a 68, 67, and 70 for a 205 total. Her 11-under total was one stroke better than the second-place finisher from Stetson.
"I am incredibly proud of this team and the progress we are making," said head coach
Aimee Neff. "We had a record-breaking performance as a program and individually this weekend! Justine played phenomenal golf and it was awesome to see her get her first college win just four tournaments into her college career. She is the complete package as a player and as a person. She no doubt just crushed any previous 54-hole record at FAU and is young in her career. She makes everyone around her better.
"
Kim Egozi also had a fantastic tournament finishing tied for fifth and two clean scorecard rounds [1st and 3rd]. Her final round 68 was outstanding and I know she felt like she left some out there. Our freshmen really stepped up and I am encouraged by their play this fall.
"As a team, we put together three solid rounds [285, 290, 285] and that is just what we needed to do to be in contention and have a chance to win. The more we put ourselves in a position to win, I believe we will break through. We already showed growth from the first time we were in contention earlier this fall to this final tournament of the fall.
"We still have plenty of areas for improvement, but I am pleased with the rapid growth this program has experienced in the last year and a half. The team's hard work is paying off.
"Our spring schedule is strong and I am looking forward to us opening up at home in February to pick up where we left off."
- Fournand shot 68-67-70 – 205 to capture her first collegiate tournament
- Fellow freshman, Kim Egozi, tied for fifth shooting 70-75-68 – 213 to finish the tournament at -3 and help keep the Owls in contention for the tournament title
- Amanda Leslie bettered her second-round score by heading into the clubhouse even on day three (73-75-72 – 220) and tied for 24th
- Senior Taylor Morgan remained consistent, shooting an averaged 75 for the tournament (76-74-75 – 225)
- Sophomore Rosa Barnak finished with a 234, shooting 74-74-86 – 234
The second-place tournament finish will send the Owls into the offseason on a high note and with the knowledge that challenging in the spring is within their grasp. FAU will open spring play Feb. 10-11 at the FAU Winter Warm-up at Osprey Point in Boca Raton.
