MIAMI, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (2-9, 1-4 C-USA) dropped a 3-2 decision to rival FIU (6-7, 5-1 C-USA) in a match that took two overtime periods to determine a winner and featured a combined 39 shots between the two teams.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
- The Owls looked like the more aggressive team early in the game, registering the first two shots of the game and controlling possession. Just 13 minutes into the game, FAU was awarded a free kick from just outside the box. Alonso Coello Camarrero took the kick for the Owls and booted the ball past the FIU keeper to put FAU on the board first.
- FAU's 1-nil score held through the rest of the first half, credited to the FAU defense that put up a wall around the goal. Hagay Jalon made several impressive saves, including in the 37th minute when FIU had three consecutive tries at the goal but none were successful. Blocked by the defense on the first two tries, Jalon made the final save to keep the Panthers off the board.
- FAU was able to hold the Panthers off well into the second half, but a penalty in the box in the 63rd minute gave FIU a successful penalty kick to even up the score.
- Adam O'Sullivan was called for his second yellow card of the match in the 66th minute, putting FAU down a player. In the 78th minute, FIU evened the field after a Panther received a red card.
- With a little over seven minutes left in regulation, Blake Dean found a streaking Jean Paul Rafols in front of the goal and Rafols was able to head the ball past FIU's keeper to retake the lead for the Owls.
- FIU responded under two minutes later with a goal of their own to equalize the score once again. Regulation and the first overtime period ended with both teams still tied, but FIU rocketed a shot that took the FAU defense by surprise just one minute into the second extra period to win it.
