Saturday afternoon's doubleheader at FAU Stadium featured two pitchers' duals with Florida Atlantic University and the University of Connecticut each earning a win. Mickey Storey and Mike McBryde combined for a shutout in game one before the Huskies held the Owls scoreless in game two.
Storey (2-1) worked out of a bases loaded jam with no one out in the second inning of the first game. After giving up three bases hits, the sophomore struck out two and Bryan Maler to ground out to first base and end the scoring threat. Working a season-high eight innings, Storey only faced three over the minimum in his final five innings and struck out eight to lower his ERA on the year to 2.59.
Mike McBryde got his second save of the year by working the ninth inning. He recorded two strikeouts and has not given up a hit in his 2 2/3 innings this season
FAU (6-5) picked up its only run of the contest in the first inning as Tim Norton hit William Block to open the game. After a walk and a single moved Block over to third before a Mike McKenna single plated the only score of the contest.
Norton (0-1) issued only one run in six innings of work and struck out four.
It was the second straight game that the Owls have held their opponents scoreless. The back-to-back shutout is the first since March 17 and 18, 2000 when FAU defeated Georgia State by scores of 2-0, 4-0.
Two one-run innings in game two gave the Huskies their first win of the season. FAU starter Chris Salberg surrendered a run in the third inning as Larry Day singled home Bryan Maler from second with two outs.
Salbereg retired 13 straight batters until an error in the eighth inning eventually led to an unearned run and gave Connecticut (1-1) a two-run cushion. Salberg (2-1)was chased after a season-high 7 1/3 innings. The junior allowed two runs on three hits and struck out seven.
Rich Sirois picked up the victory by allowing on two hits in six innings and striking out six
"We pitched very well and it is very disappointing to come away with only one win," said FAU head coach Kevin Cooney. "We had a chance to break both games open but we made some mistakes on the base."
Sunday's game time has been changed to 10 a.m. because of projected bad weather. The pitching matchup will feature FAU's Joel Schmal and UConn's Nick Tucci.
