The University of Connecticut pitchers held Florida Atlantic University to five hits to win the third game of the series 9-1 at FAU Stadium on Sunday morning. Nick Tucci pitched seven innings and gave up one run to pick up the win for UConn. FAU's Justin Martin scored the only Owl run with his first home run of the season.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings before a 50 minute rain delay ensued. UConn (2-1) then scored a run in the third inning off of FAU starter Joel Schmal. With one out, the junior issued a walk before two singles saw Dale Brannon post the first run of the game.
Four more runs in the fourth inning with two outs chased Schmal (2-2) from the contest after 3 2/3 innings. Brannon started the scoring with a two-run triple before Austin Wasserman drove home two runs with a double. Wasserman finished the afternoon going 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored.
Tucci (1-0) held the FAU bats in check until the fifth inning when he gave up a home run to Martin. FAU (6-6) squandered two others chances to score as Ovy Ramirez was left stranded at third base twice during the contest.
FAU will hit the road for the first time this week. The team will face the St. Louis Cardinals in a spring training game on Tuesday at Roger Dean Stadium before traveling to TCU for a three-game series on Friday.
