FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (28-24) traveled to Fort Myers and earned a decisive 9-3 victory over Florida Gulf Coast (33-18) on Tuesday night in the final midweek matchup of the season. The Owls and Eagles split the four-game season series, with the visiting team winning each game.
THE BEGINNING
The Owls opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning.
Brando Leroux led off with a single and eventually came home on a groundout by
Kyle Boylston. Later in the frame,
Michael Perazza lined an RBI single to right field to make it 2-0.
The Owls held a powerful FGCU lineup in check for four innings before the Eagles finally got on the board in the fifth.
Tyler Murphy limited the damage, however, inducing a flyout to strand the bases loaded.
THE TURNING POINT
Clinging to a 2-1 lead after six innings, the Owls pulled away with four runs in the seventh. A run-scoring single by Leroux made it 3-1. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Nick Romano battled through an eight-pitch at-bat before lining a single to the left-center field gap to score two. The Owls exited the inning with a 6-1 lead.
They kept their foot on the gas in the eighth, tacking on three more runs. Back-to-back walks with two outs set the table for Leroux, who logged his third hit and second RBI of the night. Patrick Wad followed suit with a two-RBI single to make it 9-1.
THE FINISH
FGCU scored one in the eighth and one in the ninth before fifth-year senior
Bryan Boully slammed the door on the Eagles' comeback hopes.
