BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball dropped to 2-3 overall after a 7-2 defeat by Iowa (4-1) on Friday night. The Owls will look to bounce back and even the series on Saturday when the teams reconvene for game two.
THE BEGINNING
Iowa led off the game with a home run off of sophomore starter
James Litman and added two more runs in the third inning to lead 3-0. The Owls left runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings before finally cashing in with a sacrifice fly from
Marshall Lipsey in the fifth.
THE TURNING POINT
Iowa loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but reliever
Kyzer Smith induced a 1-2-3 double play followed by a ground out to escape with no damage done. The Owls could not take advantage of the momentum, however, leaving another runner in scoring position in the ensuing half inning. The Hawkeyes finally pulled away with three runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.
THE FINISH
Ian Collier led off the ninth inning with a triple and scored on a base hit by
Kyle Boylston but that would be where the comeback hopes ended for the Owls.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach John McCormack
"We had some opportunities, but when we get guys on base, we've just had some bad at-bats. We need to be better in the box; we need to compete more. We're trying not to make outs instead of trying to get hits."
THE BATS
- The Owls finished with six hits, led by two singles from Xavier Moronta. Moronta also scored the team's first run.
- In addition to Collier and Boylston, Brando Leroux and Patrick Ward accounted for the remaining two hits.
THE ARMS
- Litman took the loss after five innings with three runs on seven hits. He struck out six and did not issue a walk.
- Smith allowed three runs in the seventh after pitching out of trouble in the sixth.
- Dalton Robinson struck out the side in a scoreless ninth.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Owls will look to get back to .500 on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
