BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball fell by a 7-1 final to Notre Dame in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Irish claimed the series, two games to one.
THE BEGINNING
The Owls went with freshman
Garrett Grant, and the Port Orange, Florida native was solid for four shutout innings. Grant pitched around trouble in the second and third innings. In the second, with the bases loaded and one out,
Brando Leroux fielded a line drive up the middle and doubled off the runner at second to end the frame. In the third, after two singles and a two-out walk, Grant induced a pop-up to strand the bases loaded.
On the other side, the FAU offense could not find a spark for the second straight day. They stranded a runner on base in each of the first four innings.
THE TURNING POINT
Grant departed after four innings on a pitch count, and Notre Dame finally broke through against the Owls' bullpen. Two singles, an error, and a sacrifice fly eventually led to two runs.
THE FINISH
Notre Dame pulled away with four runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth. The Owls spoiled the shutout with a
John Martinez RBI single in the ninth for a 7-1 final.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach John McCormack
"We had opportunities offensively, but we couldn't string together good at-bats. It wasn't a good Saturday and Sunday for us. Friday, we had some really good at-bats. These last two days, though, we've just been pressing too much. When you have a team with a lot of older, experienced players, they expect to be really good, and sometimes this happens."
THE BATS
- The Owls finished with seven hits, including two each from Ian Collier and Brett Patten.
- Martinez recorded his fifth RBI of the series.
THE ARMS
- Grant struck out two, walked one, and allowed five hits.
- Ryan Buckler took the loss. He allowed two runs, one of which was earned.
- Kyzer Smith contributed two shutout innings in his FAU debut.
- Bryan Boully relieved Carson Kimball in the eighth and recorded all three outs.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Owls host Missouri on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
