BOCA RATON, Fla. – Behind two first half goals, the Florida Atlantic's women's soccer team defeated Lipscomb in a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at FAU Soccer Stadium.
The Owls (1-4-1) picked up their first victory of the season, holding the Bisons (2-2-1) scoreless for the first half and tacking on two goals of their own.
For the third consecutive game, the Owls found the scoreboard first. 23 minutes in, when a free kick led to a
Sloane Young score off the assist from
Sydney Neira. The graduate student Young takes the team lead in goals and Neira takes the lead in assists, each now with two on the season.
With nine minutes remaining in the first half, a handball provided the opportunity for
Hailey Santiago to take a penalty kick, which she drilled for her first goal of the season and keeping her at 100% on penalty kicks in her collegiate career. Off Santiago's score, the Owls entered halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Lipscomb responded with a goal of its own 17 minutes into the second half to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Owls held the Bisons scoreless the rest of the way. Sophomore goalkeeper
Ashley Small saved an attempt at the tying goal three minutes later, with Bison only registering one shot attempt for the remainder of the half.
