PHILADELPHIA – Thursday night's battle of the Owls went the way of Temple against the visiting Florida Atlantic women's soccer team, 1-0 at the Temple Sports Complex.
FAU (6-7-4, 4-4-0) fell despite outshooting the homestanding Owls (10-4-2, 3-2-2) by 16 on the night. A lone first half goal was the game-winner.
THE TURNING POINT
The visiting Owls had a massive 14-1 shot advantage in the first half, with five on goal, including tremendous opportunities for
Lola Hathorne (in the 25th minute) and
Lily Paisant (in the 31st). Hathorne's run saw her race past and evade multiple Temple defenders before her shot was knocked away by the oncoming goalkeeper; Paisant's clean strike necessitated a full-on extension for the diving save. But Temple's one shot was the night's only goal, on a breakaway at the 18:55 mark.
THE FINISH
FAU's best chance after the break came in the 59th minute when
Hailey Santiago fed
Bella Burr across the face of goal, but Burr's point-blank shot ricocheted off the crossbar. That turned out to be nearly the final attempt of the second half for the visitors, held out of that column save just one more shot for the final 30-plus minutes of the match.
NOTABLES
- The total shot discrepancy for the night was 20-4 in FAU's favor.
- Santiago recorded her season high with eight shots, two on goal. Alex Bayouth (three) and Hathorne (two) had multiple attempts as well.
- Lily Holden had two saves in goal, again, against just four Temple attempts.
- She played all 90 minutes, as did Sydney Neira and Cicely-Ann Spencer-Wickham on the backline, Hathorne and Selena Gaytan in the midfield, and Santiago up front.
WHAT'S NEXT
Only two regular season matches remain for FAU, the next of which is the home finale this Sunday versus Rice. First kick will be at 1 p.m. from the FAU Soccer Stadium.
