BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic men's soccer (9-2, 4-0) earned its fifth straight win overall and seventh straight at home with a 2-0 shutout of Memphis (3-6-3, 2-3) on Sunday night. Now with 12 points, the Owls maintain first place in the American Conference standings.
After a first half where scoring opportunities were hard to come by, the Owls found a breakthrough five minutes into the second half. The chance started when Memphis failed to clear a corner kick.
Fabrizio Cubeddu's attempt took a deflection and fell into the path of
Andreas Raisanen. The senior connected with just enough power and accuracy to find the far corner for his first goal of the season.
With the lead now in tow, the Owls didn't sit back. They kept their foot on the gas and doubled the lead in the 67th minute.
Aboubacar Traore ran the length of the field and found himself with a breakaway. From just inside the penalty area, the Ivorian chipped the ball over the charging Memphis goalkeeper to make it 2-0 FAU.
Owls' goalkeeper
Alfred Mikkelsen was required to make just one save while, at the other end, the Florida Atlantic offense launched 14 shot attempts toward the Memphis goal. Mikkelsen recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season.
The Owls will look for their sixth straight victory when they travel to Charlotte next Friday, October 17, at 6 p.m.
