BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic men's tennis team, who hold a 9-3 record and are ranked No. 41 nationally, defeated fellow American Athletic Conference member UTSA by a 4-1 score on Sunday afternoon.
The Owls captured courts #1 and #3 to secure the doubles point. FAU continued to make singles lineup changes in search of the winning combination and saw three players play up a position on Sunday. The shift paid off with all three capturing their matches and recording the three necessary singles victories to secure the win.
Kurt Miller captured court #6 with a 6-2, 6-4 win, putting the Owls up 2-0. A court #5 win pulled UTSA within one, at 2-1. Juan Martin Jalif, who played #2 on Sunday, used a 6-3, 6-4 win to improve to 8-1 on the year.The match was clinched by a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 John Bernard win on court #4.
Kurt (Miller) and Juan (Martin Jalif) did a very good job taking care of business in straight sets. We always talk about staying focused and disciplined throughout the entire match and avoiding mental checkouts.
JB [John Bernard] played a tough match against a very tough opponent and won a tough mental and physical battle. He really earned the win.
Alberto (Colas) and Jiri (Jalif) also played some great tennis and were close to winning their matches. They both played a big role in our team's win today.
