Owls to host Minnesota for Four

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team will enter the program's 41st season and 14th with head coach John McCormack at the helm. It is McCormack's 32nd season overall with the Owls.

The two teams have previously met five times, with FAU holding the 4-1 series record. The first meeting was a three-game series in 2000 and was played on the exact same calendar dates, Feb.18-20. The Owls won game one 9-4, and game three 7-6, but fell in game two. FAU then traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2002, for a tournament, facing tournament host Minnesota just once and proving victorious by the score of 6-5. Minnesota returned the favor in 2004 by playing FAU in the Round Robin Diamond Classic. FAU, ranked No. 12 at the time, defeated No. 25 Minnesota 4-2. Matt O'Brien picked up the win to remain 4-0 on the year, and Rob Horst hit a fifth inning three-run homer to give the Owls the win.

Owls in Review
FAU opens 2022 after posting a 32-25 record in 2021. Preseason C-USA selection and co-captain Hunter Cooley returns as FAU's top starter from a year ago. Cooley posted an 8-4 record and a 4.23 ERA. The lefty recorded 57 strikeouts opposed to 18 walks and holds a career 3-to-1 strikeout/walk ratio. Offensively, sophomore Nolan Schanuel returns as the Owls leading hitter after posting a .343 batting average a year ago, a season in which he earned Freshman All-America honors, and is the leading long-ball threat with 11 homers in 2021.Â
The Owls' Opponent
Minnesota comes to town after recording a 6-31 record in 2021. The Gophers' pitching staff is led by returner Sam Ireland. Ireland led Minnesota a year ago with a 4.10 ERA. Redshirt senior Easton Bertrand is the team's leading offensive threat after hitting .295 a year ago with five homers.Â
