"Throughout the last four years, Logan [Downey] has continued to develop and mature, not only as an athlete, but also as a man," said head coach Lara Preacoo. "As a senior, and with all the hurdles COVID sent our way, he has continued to work hard and push the limits. We are so proud of Logan for stepping it up again this year and helping his team improve. Thank you, Logan, we will sure miss you … Once an Owl, always an Owl!"
The Plantation, Florida native swept his two events at the 2021 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships. Downey began the Championships with a gold medal on the 3-meter with 320 points, and then defended his title for the third straight year on the 1-meter with a score of 306.60. He won the CCSA Most Outstanding Male Diver of the Meet for the second straight year."What an incredible way to end his diving career," said Ryan McIntire, assistant diving coach. "Logan [Downey] has been successful ever since he started diving at a young age. I am beyond proud of Logan and it has been an honor to coach him. I have no doubt he is going to continue succeeding in life after diving."Â
In the shortened regular season, Downey earned first place on the 1-meter (305.78) at FIU. He later followed that up a third-place showing against Miami on the event with 303.45 points.Â
"It feels good knowing that my hard work and effort has paid off," said Downey.
Â
Downey will leave FAU as one of the most decorated divers in school history. He earned a gold or silver medal in all but one of his events at the conference championships in his four-year collegiate diving career. Downey holds the school record with 12 CCSA Diver of the Week accolades, while earning four gold medals and three silver medals. He is the FAU freshman record holder on the 1-meter with a score of 351.50.
Â
This award marks Downey's second straight year winning the award. The only other Owl to earn CCSA Diver of the Year in school history is current dive coach Ryan McIntire.
