BOCA RATON, Fla. – A schedule and rhythm has been established for the Florida Atlantic University's football team as the fifth week of practice began Wednesday morning.
The day began with individual work. The team separated and moved onto separate fields where the running backs and linemen worked the run game situation with the ball on their offensive 15, while the wide receivers and defensive backs focused on pass protection. FAU then move into 7-on-7 and line work. The Owls broke for hydration and then continued with "Team."
Sideline Celebrations
The team drills saw each of the four quarterbacks use their legs to move the ball or keep the drive alive. Freshman Willie Taggart, Jr. was the first to move the chains by doing so. Redshirt freshman quarterback Javion Posey executed a perfect fake and then blazed up the field for 90 yards and the score
Junior running back Malcolm Davidson had a 20-yard run and redshirt junior tight end Logan Peterson grabbed a reception. Not to be outdone, the defensive duo of sophomore cornerback "Smoke" Romain Mungin and senior safety Jordan Helm, who gathered two turnovers on the day, broke up a pass minutes before the break
The Owls dressed in full pads and returned to the field to see graduate student quarterback Justin Agner find tight end Logan Peterson on back-to-back plays. The first time was down the sideline and the second across the middle
Helm recovered a bad snap, and later hauled in an interception
Taggart found redshirt junior receiver Jordan Merrell 25 yards down the sideline, and if that play didn't make the highlight tape, Merrell's next reception was a leaping, one-handed toe tapper for another first down
Following specials teams work, head coach Willie Taggart set up the ground rules for the day's competition and announced to the defense that the offense was in the lead. The response was immediate with freshman linebacker Chris Jones batting down the ball
Agner hit wide receiver Aaron Young, a graduate student, over the middle to move the chains, while redshirt junior quarterback Nick Tronti read his progressions and then dashed 10 yards for the first down
Helm's interception changed the possessions and the signal caller, setting up Taggart's pass to junior wideout Jefftey Joseph and fellow freshman Lajohntay Wester building a drive
The defense used a sack to change possession once more, while both redshirt junior running back Daniel Leconte and senior receiver Willie Wright made things happen with their legs
