Baseball Closes Out Fall with Annual World Series

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team concluded the fall preseason with their annual intrasquad World Series game. The competition finished up Friday after two days and 10 innings, with the Red team prevailing.

Under normal run scoring, Red (captained by Bobby Morgensen and Hunter Cooley) defeated Navy (captains Dylan O'Connell and Jared DeSantolo), 8-4. Using the Mamula Modified Scoring System – patent pending – with one team earning a certain amount of points when it outscores the other in an inning, Red still won the event, 9-4.

"Congratulations to Red on a well-earned victory. I really enjoy watching the World Series every year, seeing the guys compete against each other. It's their deal, they make the moves, it's interesting to watch the moves they make and how they set up the team. I was encouraged by everything I saw, and I thought it was a great end to a good fall."

The Turning Point
Run-wise, the teams were tied at 2-2 when rain forced an early end to Thursday's proceedings with Red batting in the bottom of the third. Not long after play resumed Friday, Red scored twice to go ahead for good, in the sixth (batting in the top half as the teams switched sides of the scoreboard), on a Nolan Schanuel double. The true freshman had previously hit a two-run home run in the first, the only homer of the entire event.

The Finish
Red was still ahead on runs, 5-3, heading into the 10th and final frame, and added three more that all but sealed it. Two scored on a batted ball through the right side by Shane Magrann, with insurance coming on a groundout by Jacob Josey. Navy also came through with two-run scoring in the bottom half, on a Victor Castillo RBI single, but Red reliever Brock Helverson got a punchout to leave two on and cap the ballgame.

- Cooley picked up the win for his team with three scoreless innings
- Braden Ostrander had the only perfect inning on his side, in the eighth
- Helverson closed it out, and had two strikeouts to tie for the team lead with Matt Sparling, who pitched the second
- Navy had two perfect frames, Nicholas Del Prado in the fourth – when he struck out the side – and Mike Entenza in the ninth
- All five pitchers had multiple strikeouts. Del Prado struck out four batters among the seven outs he recorded, tying starter Javi Rivera (in three innings of work) for the most on the squad
- Entenza had three K's, and Sam Drumheller and Dylan O'Connell notched two apiece

- Schanuel had the two extra base hits and four RBI, while scoring twice
- Morgensen was on base four times, with a double, single and two walks. He had two runs scored and an RBI
- Jalen DeBose and Jacob Josey each reached three times, both with two hits (each a single and a double) and added one stolen base apiece
- DeBose scored twice; Josey had one run and one RBI
- Castillo had three of the team's four RBI
- He recorded three hits (two singles and a double), plus a walk and successful sacrifice
- Steven Loden added the other run-scoring hit, a single in the seventh
- Jackson Wenstrom had two singles, drew two walks and laid down a successful sac bunt as well
- Wenstrom scored one run, Mitchell Hartigan two, and BJ Murray the other
