BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University men's tennis is edging towards the back end of its 2019 regular season schedule, wrapping up the home slate Friday versus Brown, then traveling for a Sunday night affair at No. 33 UCF in Orlando.
Owl Review
Over the last couple of weeks, the Owls (14-7) have put together a six-match winning streak, and have won nine of their last 11. At home, the team is a perfect 8-0 with just Senior Day remaining, when beforehand Friday,
Mehdi Laalej and
Gabriel Sidney will be celebrated. Laalej leads the Owls with 18 singles wins overall, and a 15-1 mark during dual match season. He is also riding a current win streak of 12 in a row. Sidney has provided four straight singles wins, three coming in straight sets, and when pairing with Laalej, has five dual match doubles wins.
Joining Laalej with double-digit singles wins this spring are
Alvaro Fernandez Horta, who is 12-3, and with 11 wins apiece,
Jason Legall and
Kirac Bekisoglu.
Ignacio Garcia is one singles victory away from joining the quartet, currently at 9-6. On the doubles side, Legall and Garcia are No. 69 in the Oracle/ITA Division I rankings with a 13-6 mark during dual match play, all in the No. 1 slot. Bekisoglu has 11 doubles wins as well, with an 8-4 mark when teaming alongside
Thomas Guy.
Owl Preview
Brown (7-5) comes to Boca Raton Friday on the tail end of three straight in the Sunshine State. The Bears were topped by North Florida on Tuesday, 5-2, and still have Florida Gulf Coast to go, Thursday at 5 p.m. The team features Charles Tan and Roger Chou, the No. 78 doubles pairing in the country according to Oracle/ITA.
UCF (10-9) climbed nine spots in the latest Oracle/ITA rankings, but have lost five of their last seven, including last time out (last Friday vs. Illinois, a 4-2 decision). For the Knights, No. 38 singles player Gabriel Decamps and No. 54 doubles duo Trey Hilderbrand and Bogdan Pavel are ranked by Oracle/ITA.

Just three more matches remain in regular season play, all coming in Charlotte, and all against Conference USA foes. On Friday, April 5, the Owls take on Old Dominion; the following day, the host Charlotte 49ers; and Sunday, the regular season wraps against Middle Tennessee. Two weeks after is the 2019 C-USA Championship, beginning April 19 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
