LAST TIME OUT
The Owls (0-2-0) traveled to Utah for a pair of matches to open the 2018 season. FAU took on UNLV first and then faced Utah Valley in Orem, Utah. Alex Alexis and Gonzalo Pena Barrasus each got off four shots across the two matches and Hagay Jalon made 12 saves after playing all 180 minutes in-goal for the Owls.
ABOUT ST. THOMAS
The Bobcats (1-0-0) are coming off their most successful season in program history in 2017 with a 14-1-2 record and second round exit in the NAIA National Tournament. Returning the core of that team, the Bobcats are currently ranked No. 12 overall in the NAIA polls and were picked to win the Sun Conference.
St. Thomas won its season-opener against Ave Maria, 4-1, last weekend behind a hat trick from Itay Forkosh in his debut with the team.
FRESH FACES
FAU added 21 newcomers to the 2018 roster, including 14 freshman, two Division I transfers and three Junior College transfers.
Second-year head coach Joey Worthen and staff brought in a group of players with varying experience, both in years and in backgrounds. Junior Marcelo Da Silva Anton comes to FAU after winning back-to-back national championships at the junior college level. Senior Alberto Escobedo joins the team after being a three-year starter at Jacksonville. Of the 14 freshman, nine played high school soccer in America while five played internationally.
RETURNING VETERANS
Eight players from the 2017 squad return to the pitch for the Owls. Sophomore Ferdinand Solberg started in 15 matches last season, playing in all 16, recording an assist and eight shots. Fellow sophomore Alvaro Rodriguez played in all but one game last season and had an assist and registered 11 shots.
The keepers are an experienced group with a junior, redshirt junior and senior represented in the ranks. Daniel Ragoo and Luis Aranzazu both saw action last season.
UP NEXT FOR THE OWLS
The Owls will open Conference USA play, hosting South Carolina on September 7 at FAU Soccer Stadium. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
