BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (1-2-0) topped St. Thomas (1-1-0), 1-0, on Saturday night at FAU Soccer Stadium and did so in dramatic fashion. With eight seconds left in the second overtime period, Gonzalo Pena Barrasus scored to give the Owls the win.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
A defensive battle between the teams, neither squad was able to score in regulation or the first overtime, sending the match to a second extra period.
As the clock ticked towards zero, the Owls mounted offensive pressure looking to avoid the tie. Alonso Coello Camarero into the box from the left and crossed the ball over to the right to Blake Dean. Dean served the ball into a crowd of Owls and Gonzalo Pena Barrasus headed the ball past the Bobcats' keeper for the win.
Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Hagay Jalon recorded his first shutout as an Owl against a St. Thomas team that scored four goals in its season opener. Jalon had three saves on the night, two of those saves came in the final overtime as the Bobcats searched for a game-winning goal.
FAU had six shots on goal in the match, including two from Pena Barrasus.
