MIAMI, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University beach volleyball team's defeat of #11 Grand Canyon was the highlight of day one at the FIU Surf N' Turf Invitational on Friday.

Match 1 vs. #11 Grand Canyon

Gabrielle Dischler and Jessalyn Kinlaw won in straight sets at no. 2 to put FAU up 1-0. Amanda Silva and Carly Scarbrough dropped at straight set decision on court one to tie the score. Erica Brok and Mackenzie Morris swept on court three to regain the lead for the Sandy Owls. Julia Lewkowicz and Brittany Pellitteri lost a closely contested third set on court five, meaning the entire match hinged on court four. On that court, Nicole Navarro and Kaila Dorish had to overcome a first set loss and win back-to-back nailbiters in sets two and three to clinch the match for FAU. Ashlan Cunningham and Nicole Grant won in straight sets on the exhibition court.

FAU had several close calls in the match, losing a set by three points or less on courts one, two, four and five. Grant and Cunningham forced a third set in the exhibition, but came up short.

Match 3 vs. Tulane

Brok and Morris reestablished their winning ways with a straight set win on court three, 21-14, 21-16. Dischler and Kinlaw swept court two with matching 21-18 scores. Cunningham and Grant lost a pair of close ones on court five, as did Navarro and Dorish at no. 4. Scarbrough and Silva nearly swept court one after winning the first set, but came up just short in the second and dropped a heartbreaker in the third.
