Kerrith Whyte, Jr., a Florida Atlantic University running back and kick returner, has earned a spot on the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for the week of Oct. 7.
The Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse is given to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission. Whyte's game exemplifies the Hornung honor, proven with last Saturday's efforts in FAU's 52-33 win over Conference USA opponent Old Dominion.
In the history of FAU football, there had been just one kick return for a score and that was accomplished for the first time, in 2017, 17 years after the program began, by Whyte. On Saturday, the redshirt junior duplicated the feat with the program's longest kick return, of 100 yards. The timely scoring return followed a five-play, 79-yard scoring drive that drew the Monarchs within five (26-21) with 6:08 remaining in the third. Whyte took just 13 seconds to put the Owls back up by 13 and shift the momentum back to the Owls, providing a much-needed confidence boost for a team who had built impressive first half leads in recent weeks only to see them evaporate in the third.
Whyte provided half of the one-two FAU running game punch with nine carries for 61 yards, an average of 6.8 yards per carry, with two scores. He also was credited with 25 receiving yards on two receptions, along with his lone return. All told, he found the end zone three of the eight times the Owls scored, and tallied a game-high of 186 all-purpose yards. Whyte is just the second C-USA player in 2018 to return a kick for a score.
The Owls have a bye week this week and will travel to Huntington, West Virginia for a 2:30 p.m. C-USA game versus Marshall. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network and also will air on ESPN West Palm 106.3 FM. FAU will return home to play host to Louisiana Tech on Friday, Oct. 26. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-866-FAU-Owls.
