Offense Takes Scrimmage Two Behind Big Runs

BOCA RATON, FL - DiIvory Edgecomb touched the ball just five times, but tallied 165 yards on the ground and scored twice in Florida Atlantic University's second spring football scrimmage.
The offense rebounded after last Saturday's poor performance with a total of 608 yards. The defense, despite dropping the afternoon's contest scored 21 points in the 40-21 loss.
"The defense, though they didn't score as much as last week, kept the offense in check," said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU's head football coach. "They provided a good pass rush and the attitude in practice is paying off."
The afternoon began with redshirt sophomore Rusty Smith under center. Smith put together 12 plays but was forced to settle for a Warley Leroy field goal and the first three points of the day. Smith, who was 9-of-17 for 126 yards and two touchdowns, gave way to redshirt freshman Jeff VanKamp who received the bulk of the work at quarterback. VanKamp was 9-of-27 with two interceptions and 90 yards. Freshman Robert Nolan also saw action late in the day and was 3-of-7 for 19 yards.
The Owls used seven backs in its ground attack. Edgecomb had two breakaways, but fellow senior Charles Pierre also had an outstanding day with seven carries for 79 yards.
The kickers also received work on Saturday with Warley Leroy kicking one field goal and two extra points. Ryan Paros had a field goal and an extra point and Michael Cal had an extra point.
Scrimmages are scored by a modified scoring system. The offense scores in a traditional fashion awarding six points for a touchdown, three for field goals and one or two for extra points. The offense begins the drive at its 40 and has three plays to move the chains. The defense is awarded one point for stopping the offense in three plays, three points for a turnover and can score in the traditional fashion. Big scores on the defensive side came via two interceptions. The first was an interception by Tavious Polo, which he returned 20 yards. The second was an interception by Tavoris Hill in the end zone.
The Spring Game and rubber match is schedule for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at the track and field complex. Admission and parking is free. There will also be an interactive area and special appearances by the cheerleaders and mascot.
