Day two of the young Florida Atlantic University season saw the Owls pick up two victories to open the 2007 season with a sweep. FAU took a doubleheader from Mississippi Valley State by winning the first of two 33-3 and closed out the day with an 11-7 victory on Saturday.
In game one, MVSU (0-3) jumped on the board with three runs in the first. FAU (3-0) responded with five in the bottom of the innings. FAU starter Brandon Cooney returned to the mound to hold MVSU scoreless through the next four innings before he gave way to Anthony Bradley and Chris Salberg faced the minimum six batters. On the other hand, FAU sent 58 batters to the plate during the game and scored 28 runs between the second and fourth innings.
Newcomer Daniel Bomback led the Owls with a 5-for-5 plate performance including five runs scored. Robbie Widlansky drove in six runs. In total, the Owls hit 10 extra base hits. Mike McKenna was 2-for-3 with a double and one of the five homers hit for FAU.
The 33 runs scored by FAU broke the previous mark of 31 set against Harford in 2002. Bomback tied an FAU record with five runs scored, while Widlansky and Daniel Cook had career days with six RBI and five hits, respectively. Riaan Spangjer-Furstenburg also had a career day as he hit a grand slam in his first collegiate at bat.
The Owls gained the early momentum in game two by posting five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Justin Ferreira posted two RBI on the day with a double and picked up a triple in his next at bats.
MVSU rebounded in the top of the third to bring the game within one run. Kelvin Davila started the scoring with a two-run homer. The Owls responded with runs in the next three innings to put the game out of reach. William Block led the team with three RBI, including a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
Mike Obradovich earned the win for FAU in his first start as an Owl. In five innings the junior struck out five. Chris Salberg and Joel Schmal closed out the final 3 1/3 innings and struck out seven, while holdings the Delta Devils to four hits.
FAU returns to action next weekend to take on the University of Cincinnati in a three-game series starting Friday at 7 p.m.
