Mickey Storey struck out eight batters and the Florida Atlantic University bullpen combined for another six strikeouts as FAU pulled out a 4-3 win over the University of Cincinnati Friday night at FAU Stadium. Joel Schmal earned his first save of the season as he recorded the final four outs of the contest.
The Owls improve to 4-0 on the year, while the Bearcats opened the season with a loss. With five innings of work, Storey earned his second win of the year in two appearances. Justin Phillabaum, Chris Salberg and Brett Cannon all worked out of the bullpen to hold the Bearcats to five hits. UC's Brian Szarmach picked up two hits to lead the team and finished with one of Cincinnati's two home runs.
Steve Blevins suffered the loss in his first start of the season. He worked five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.
Robbie Widlansky and Tyler Stevens both picked up two hits off of Blevins to lead FAU. Both picked up hits in the first inning to spark the two-run first inning for the Owls. Widlansky lined a double past the first baseman to put two runners into scoring position before Mike McKenna picked up an RBI with a groundout and Stevens singled home Widlansky.
Leadoff singles in both the second and fourth innings off of Blevins produced FAU's other two runs.
UC reliever Billy Welsh entered in the sixth inning and did not give up a hit to the FAU offense in the final three innings of play.
The two teams will square off in a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday. FAU's Brandon Cooney is expected to face left-handed pitcher Dan Osterbrock.
