Owls Fall in Bottom of the Ninth

A run in the bottom of the ninth innings on a wild pitch sealed a 1-0 win for the University of North Florida over Florida Atlantic University on Friday night in Jacksonville. Mickey Storey pitched a complete game but suffered the loss for the Owls as they fall to 12-13, 2-5 A-Sun, while UNF improves to 14-11, 7-3 A-Sun.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Travis Martin singled for UNF's sixth hit of the night. James Belyea followed Martin's single with his first hit of the night to move pinch runner Brian Wilson into scoring position. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position before the team intentionally walked pinch hitter Brennan Grogan. Another wild pitch plated the winning run for the Ospreys.
Storey (3-4) threw his second complete game in as many outings. The sophomore allowed seven hits and struck out nine while allowing one walk. He struck out the side in the second innings and had four 1-2-3 innings.
His counterpart, Jeremy Papelbon had a perfect game going into the sixth inning before Tyler Stevens drew a walk. Stevens advanced to second on a groundout and was one of two runners to advance to second against the Ospreys. Jeremy Papalbon threw a career-high 8 1/3 innings and struck out a career-high 13 batters on two hits.
FAU's best scoring chance came in the ninth inning as Jordan Hafer came up with a one-out single. The hit knocked Jeremy Papelbon from the game and his brother, Josh Papelbon entered. After a sacrifice bunt by Nick Arata, Ovy Ramirez was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second before a ground out to second base ended the threat.
Josh Papelbon improved to 4-2 on the year and did not allow a runner on base in his 2/3 innings.
FAU had two runners in scoring position. In the sixth, Tyler Stevens was the first FAU batter to reach base when he drew a walk from starter Jeremy Papelbon. He advanced to second on a groundout.
In the ninth, Jordan Hafer picked up the team's second hit of the game and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Arata.
The two teams will meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second game of the three-game series at Harmon Stadium.
