ATLANTA, GA -
Florida Atlantic University (30-17, 10-8 Trans America Athletic Conference) needed extra innings to pull off an 11-6 win over Trans America Athletic Conference rival Georgia State University (18-27, 6-12 TAAC) in game one of a doubleheader Saturday. The Panthers defeated FAU in game two 11-0.
Game one was scoreless until the fourth when LJ Biernbaum led-off with a single through the right side. Mike Valdes followed with a two-run homer, his fifth of the year. GSU followed in the bottom with a two-run home run by Mic Knox.
The Blue Wave scored once in the fifth before giving up three in the bottom half of the inning. In the seventh, FAU's Jason Sullivan capitalized on three walks with a bases-loaded single to left center, which scored two. With Valdes at third, the GSU pitcher, Andrew Rush threw to second as Sullivan stumbled on a steal attempt, which allowed Valdes to score the go ahead run. In the bottom of the seventh, GSU tied the game once more to send the contest into extra innings.
After FAU loaded the bases, Ryan Humphrey drew a walk to take the lead at 7-6. With the bases still loaded and two out, Biernbaum hit a grand slam to build an 11-6 lead that FAU was able to preserve for the victory.
Chris Pillsbury (4-3) earned the win for FAU, retiring all four batters he faced. Danny Core started the game.
In game two, GSU dominated by out-hitting FAU 14-5 with the Blue Wave employing six different pitchers. Travis NeSmith (2-2) took the loss.
FAU next plays no. 23 Stetson April 27 in the first of a three-game series in Boca Raton.
