A triple play to end the second inning and a five-run ninth were not enough to lift Florida Atlantic University (30-18, 10-9 TAAC) over no. 19 ranked Stetson (38-6, 17-2 TAAC) as they were defeated 18-7.
Stetson took an early lead in the first. With two outs, Frank Corr hit a solo homer to left field and then four singles and a walk later the Hatters were leading 3-0. They managed to score one more in the second and three more in the fifth before FAU was able to get on the board.
In the second, FAU ended a Stetson threat with a man on first and second when Frank Corr hit a line drive to third baseman Dean Devine. Devine stepped on the base, threw to second and Jason Sullivan delivered the ball to first for the third out of the inning.
Florida Atlantic's two runs in the bottom of the fifth came off of an LJ Biernbaum single up the middle which scored Bobby Spano and Gabe Somarriba. Biernbaum earned another RBI in the ninth to bring his team leading RBI total to 47.
FAU then went through four pitchers in the eighth inning while Stetson was able to score ten runs. All nine batters managed to cross the plate for the Hatters.
In the bottom of the ninth Florida Atlantic was able to muster a little rally as they scored five runs of their own. Three singles by Somarriba, Mike Valdes, and Shaen O'Connor, along with a Biernbaun double, got the rally started and put men on base for a two-run home run by Alex Fernandez, his first of the year.
Chris Pillsbury (4-4) took the loss for FAU. He struck out two, walked two, and gave up seven earned runs on twelve hits in 4 2/3 innings work. Greg Eubanks, Nelson Lopez, Aaron Diehl, and Matt O'Brien all came out of the pen for Florida Atlantic.
Lenny DiNardo earned his tenth win of the season for the Hatters and improves to 10-1.
