Geno Matias-Smith came to Florida Atlantic in the spring of 2019 as a strength assistant with his primary focus on football.
Prior to FAU, Matias-Smith worked as a strength and conditioning intern for the University of Alabama, under the direction of head football coach Nick Saban, head baseball coach Brad Bohannon and head football strength coach Scott Cochran. He gained experience working with training sessions as well as with individual athletes, while also serving as a football scouting and defensive scheme volunteer.
Before returning to his college alma mater, Matias-Smith worked in the private sector in his hometown of Atlanta as a bail bond agent. In that role, he provided customer guidance and compliance of bond expectations. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach for Riverwood High School where he worked with the defensive backs.
He began his coaching career shortly after a stint with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted college free agent. Matias-Smith was with the Redskins from May of 2016 through September 2016.
Matias-Smith played his collegiate career at the University of Alabama where he was a four-year letterwinner, a three-time National Champion (1 BCS, 2 CFBP) and a two-time SEC Champion. He graduated in December of 2015 with a Bachelor of Science degree in communication. He graduated with a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Matias-Smith continues to give back to his hometown of Atlanta, where he attended and played football for St. Pius X Catholic High School, by volunteering with the American Association of Adapted Sports (AAASP) and as a tutor for Special Education Students.
