BOCA RATON, Fla. – The day all college football players and coaches anticipate at the beginning of every fall preseason is the first day of full contact. For the Florida Atlantic football team, that day was Thursday.
Following practice, Hagerty Family Head Football Coach Zach Kittley praised the Owls for special teams work, energy throughout practice, and the defensive stand at the end of practice.

On the performance of the special teams in fall camp
"At kicker, we added Collin (Rogers), who has done it for a long time. If you go look at his numbers, there are very few guys that have as many points. He is experienced, he has been through it all. He has been in the highest of highs. He has had some adversity too. But when he is on, he is as good as anybody I have been around. When I have a veteran guy like that who knows what he is doing, it is a real advantage for a football team to have that experience. H he is great, but it really is the whole operation. We have Reed, who brings a lot as a punter. He is also experienced. He led the Sun Belt last year in punting and he is very talented. But the thing that he also brings is he is a great holder. That adds an element that helps out Collin. And then we have Walker (Adkinson). He has played a lot of football. Of course, last year, he sat behind Jackson (Lee) who was phenomenal, but in his previous school, he was a starter. This is nothing new to them, they all have multiple games of experience. When you have three guys who know what they are doing, it makes my job a lot easier, and those guys want to be great, so I can push them. I can coach them hard, because they are not where they want to get to. But the talent and the experience is there."
On the role of special teams in aggressive offense
"We still had 17 [field goal] attempts last year, which is a decent number. We are in scoring range a lot because of the nature of our offense. A lot of that comes down to analytics, the situation, but by the nature of what we have on our offense, we know we are going to be in scoring position…The situation could be totally different this year. We could kick 30 field goals. Coach (Kittley) is not opposed, he is going to do whatever helps us win at the end of the day. Those guys believe that too. They know there is going to be a time and place that we are going to need them to step up and make a kick, and that is going to happen. You are not going to always go for it. It is not just in field goal kicking or punting, we want to be aggressive when we are on the other side of it too. So that is why I think Coach invests so much into it, because it is also what we can do to affect the other team when they choose to kick it or punt it, what can we do to have an advance for us to give our offense more field position?"

On the program's emphasis of special teams
"When I came on my visit and I talked to [Coach Schovanec] on the phone and first met him, I was like 'this guy loves special teams and he is going to be a guy that is going to be involved and do everything he can for the whole group' and I have loved it. I have been having a great time, and I have loved being involved in everything and him involving us in everything, so it has been great."
On the importance of kicking mechanics
"[Last year] I did not have that confidence that I had the previous three years where I had done so much and had so much success. That was a big thing that the spring was good for, to build that confidence and now bleed into fall camp and keep building that confidence into the season."

On the program prioritizing special teams
"I think it is really cool to have a coach like Coach Kitley and [Schovanec], that really prioritize the value of a punter and what they can do and day-to-day just really make it an effort to point out the fact that we have a good punter, we have a great coverage team. We are going to do some great things this year on a punt. I think just having a coach that praises us is really cool."
On different styles of kicks
"There are a couple things that go into that. One, there are a couple of traditional style punts that I like to stick to that I put everything into and I know that is my best. And then everything else that goes out of that, I am constantly working on that. Being able to use all those tools in specific scenarios are going to be super helpful. Whatever kind of punt it is, wherever we are trying to put it…I think being able to use those tools is going to be super helpful for sure."
On playing with an aggressive offense
"I am here to help the team, do the best we can. If I do not touch the field, then our team is doing something right. You know, for me personally, I love punting, I love helping my team, so whenever I get out there, I am just going to do my part. do my job and put it as high and as far as I can."
