DENTON, Texas – Back-to-back six-run innings powered the Florida Atlantic softball team to a season-best 17 runs in a 17-7 victory over North Texas on Friday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.
The Owls (26-13, 8-7) soared past the Mean Green (22-17, 11-4) with 15 hits and eight walks. Junior outfielder
Ciara Gibson continued her extraordinary stretch at the plate with her sixth home run in nine games along with two doubles.
In the circle, senior pitcher
Autumn Courtney pitched four innings to earn the win and improved her record to 14-5, the most victories in the American Conference.
THE BEGINNING
Like the other games in the series, the Owls struck first in the top of the first inning. Senior catcher
Chloe Yeatts' deep single to right center drove in redshirt junior outfielder
Kylie Hammonds, followed by senior first baseman
Yani Guzman's perfectly placed bunt that brought home another run for the 2-0 lead.
The Mean Green scored in the bottom frame on a two-run double to tie the game at two apiece.
THE TURNING POINT
Bookended by a pair of Gibson doubles, Florida Atlantic plated five hits and recorded two walks as well as a hit-by-pitch on the way to six runs in the top of the second.
North Texas countered with another two-run double, but the Owls had a lot more in them in the top of the third. The team loaded the bases and scored twice before its first out and added another run on a sacrifice fly. Gibson's second homer of the series was a three-run blast to give FAU its second consecutive six-run inning and a 14-4 advantage.
THE FINISH
The Owls immediately loaded the bases in the top of the fourth and soon scored on a throwing error to give them their season high in runs. Junior
Kiley Shelton then came off the bench to deliver a two-run double to extend the Owls season-best offensive outing to 17-4.
A trio of North Texas runs in the bottom of the fifth was not enough, sending Florida Atlantic home with its 10th run-rule win of the season.
