TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Atlantic's softball team fell to South Florida by a 3-2 score on Friday evening.
The Owls (26-14, 8-8) out-hit the first-place Bulls (30-13, 12-4) but a seventh-inning rally came up one run short.
Despite taking the loss, senior pitcher
Autumn Courtney was effective in the circle, allowing just three hits and two earned runs to go with four strikeouts.
THE BEGINNING
Sophomore outfielder
Bella Foran robbed South Florida of a two-run homer in deep left field to keep the game scoreless through two innings.
The Bulls ultimately got on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo homer to right field.
THE TURNING POINT
Florida Atlantic answered in the top of the fourth with three straight base hits. Freshman
Lily Lowery's infield single was followed by a double from senior catcher
Chloe Yeatts to advance Lowery to third.
Junior outfielder
Ciara Gibson then continued her strong stretch at the plate with an RBI single plating Lowery to tie the game at 1-1.
THE FINISH
The Bulls capitalized on an FAU throwing error that allowed a runner to advance from first to home to take the lead.
An RBI double by South Florida in the bottom of the sixth grew the lead to 3-1. Florida Atlantic found life in the top of the seventh, leading off the inning with three consecutive Owls reaching base. Redshirt senior
Cameryn Orland's hit advanced
McKenna Mulholland to third, with the latter then scoring off a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 3-2 before a groundout finished the night.
NOTES/NOTABLE
· Gibson has recorded an RBI in 10 straight games and has recorded 15 total during that span.
· In American Conference play, Yeatts has 14 hits, third on the team.
· Sophomore
Lily Holtje grew her team lead in walks to 25.
· Courtney's ERA stands at 2.42, second in the conference.
