BOCA RATON, Fla. – Behind a two-home run outing from senior catcher Chloe Yeatts, the Florida Atlantic softball team picked up 9-3 win over Tulsa on Saturday to tie the series on Joan Joyce Field at FAU Softball Stadium.
The Owls (27-17, 9-11) were aggressive early on with seven runs in the first three innings and held the Golden Hurricane (17-25, 8-12) scoreless for six out of seven frames.
Freshman pitcher Makenna Lee made the start in the circle and made way for senior Madison Inscoe who picked up the win after allowing just one hit in 4.2 scoreless innings.
THE BEGINNING
Offense got rolling right away in the bottom of the first with a leadoff single by sophomore outfielder Bella Foran followed by a hit from redshirt junior Kylie Hammonds. Yeatts' first at-bat was a no-doubt shot to left field to score all three.
An RBI single by sophomore shortstop Hannah Rivers scored senior first baseman Yani Guzman to increase the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second. The Golden Hurricane nearly batted around in the top of the third on the way to three runs to close the gap to one.
THE TURNING POINT
Hammonds' second hit of the game, a double, led off the bottom of the third and was scored on the next at-bat by Yeats' second homer of the afternoon, another no-doubter this time to opposite right field.
A walk by junior Karson Davey was followed by an RBI double from junior outfielder Ciara Gibson to up the score to 7-3 without an out on the board.
THE FINISH
Back-to-back acrobatic putouts from the Owls' defense, first by Bella Foran and then by senior third baseman Jesiana Mora, led to Golden Hurricane batters being quickly retired in the top of the fourth.
The Owls tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back wild pitches to put the game out of reach, with Inscoe going 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to finish the afternoon.
