BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (19-19, 6-8) will have an opportunity to sweep Tulane on Sunday after taking game two from the Green Wave by a 10-9 final on Saturday.
THE BEGINNING
Ian Collier got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first inning. Brando Leroux made it 3-0 in the second with his first home run of the season, an opposite-field two-run blast. In the fifth, the Owls did damage with two outs. Collier poked a base hit through the right side and came all the way around to score from first on a double to the gap off the bat of Brett Patten.
THE TURNING POINT
Redshirt sophomore starter Kide Adetuyi had another quality start on the mound. Adetuyi struck out seven and held the Green Wave scoreless for the first five innings. A two-out, two-run homer in the sixth proved to be the only blemish, but the FAU offense immediately picked up their starter. In the bottom of the frame, run-scoring hits from Patrick Ward and Nick Romano restored a four-run lead at 6-2.
The Owls added four more runs in the seventh to push the lead to 10-2. Collier was the catalyst again with a leadoff single. Pinch-runner TJ Gramesty eventually came around to score on a hard-hit infield single by Kyle Boylston. Ward followed with a two-run home run that narrowly cleared the wall in left field. Nick Romano completed the scoring with a seeing-eye single up the middle to drive in Leroux.
THE FINISH
The Owls appeared to be home-free with a 10-3 lead entering the ninth inning. Tulane had other ideas, however. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. A wild pitch allowed a run to score. With two on and one out, the Green Wave's Tanner Chun lined a double off the right field wall to cut the lead to 10-6. The Owls were forced to go to bullpen ace Zach Kilby. A walk and another RBI single made it 10-7. A double down the right field line scored two more, made it a one-run game, and put the tying run in scoring position. Finally, Kilby was able to get Hugh Pinkney, the 10th batter of the inning, to pop out to shallow right field to end the game and preserve the series victory.
