All-Around Owls Take Game One Against Roadrunners

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic's softball team used three home runs on offense and a masterclass defensive performance to move past UTSA in a 5-0 shutout victory on Friday evening.
The Owls (23-11, 5-5) are on a three-game winning streak with the series-opening win over the Roadrunners (19-16, 7-3). At the plate, junior outfielder Ciara Gibson became the second FAU player in as many outings to have a multi-home run game. She has hit four in her last four games.
A UTSA double in the game's second at-bat was all senior starter Autumn Courtney conceded, holding UTSA hitless the rest of the way.
THE BEGINNING
The Roadrunners threatened early with runners on second and third with no outs in the opening frame, but a rundown, pop up, and a swinging strikeout by Courtney retired the side.
FAU's first hit of the game was a no-doubt shot by Gibson in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Owls tacked on another run in the bottom of the third with senior third baseman Jesiana Mora's RBI double, which scored sophomore Bella Foran.
THE TURNING POINT
Leading off the bottom of the fourth, Gibson launched her second homer of the day to the exact same spot, right-center, to put the Owls up 3-0.
Courtney, with help from plays by Foran in the outfield continued to hold the Roadrunners in check, retiring 15 straight batters while striking out six.
THE FINISH
A pair of pinch hitters provided cushion for the Owls in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Kiley Shelton reached base and soon scored off senior Yani Guzman's home run blast that was just fair, her second round tripper of the season.
Foran's seventh outfield putout was the final out needed to secure the shutout.
