BOCA RATON, Fla. – In a Saturday doubleheader, the Florida Atlantic softball team defeated UTSA by a score of 8-2 in game one and 9-0 in game two to sweep the three-game series on Joan Joyce Field at FAU Softball Stadium.
To open the day, the Owls (26-11, 7-5) utilized a grand slam by senior first baseman Yani Guzman to move past the Roadrunners (19-18, 7-5). Later in the afternoon, senior pitcher Autumn Courtney recorded her second shutout in as many days while FAU used eight runs in the bottom of the third to tally its eighth run-rule win of the season.
GAME ONE
The Roadrunners struck first with a two-run single in the top of the second inning, but the Owls responded with two runs via a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Guzman's grand slam, the Owls' first of the season, blew the game open in the bottom of the third, taking a 7-2 lead. FAU tacked on an insurance run off an error in the fifth to ultimately secure the series victory.
In the circle, senior pitcher Madison Inscoe entered in relief and held UTSA scoreless, allowing just one hit while striking out three in five innings to improve to 3-0 on the season.
GAME TWO
Courtney picked up right where she left off from the previous night with a 1-2-3 inning to begin the final outing. An RBI single by senior catcher Chloe Yeatts opened scoring in the bottom of the second.
The Owls batted around in the bottom of the third on the way to a season-best eight runs in one inning. Redshirt junior Kylie Hammonds and senior third baseman Jesiana Mora each had two hits in the inning while the rest of the team combined for three walks, two hits and a hit-by-pitch. Florida Atlantic kept the bases loaded for seven consecutive batters, adding on to the lead one-by-one.
A 9-0 advantage through five was enough for the Owls to win their fifth straight game and secure their first sweep of the season in American Conference play.
