Owls Walk-Off UMBC for Second Time in Three Days

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball walked off UMBC, 4-3, in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon to claim the weekend series. The Owls (13-7) have won 10 of their last 12 games overall.
THE BEGINNING
UMBC (7-8) scored first on Sunday, rallying with two outs in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead against FAU freshman Garrett Grant. They doubled the lead in the third inning before the Owls answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. A Kyle Boylston infield single, followed by two hit-by-pitches, loaded the bases. Michael Perazza's sacrifice fly to deep right field scored Boylston to make it 2-1.
THE TURNING POINT
Grant departed after 4.1 innings, and the Owls' bullpen duo of Zach Kilby and Bryan Boully held the Retrievers down from that point forward. Kilby worked around UMBC runners in scoring position in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. He turned it over to Boully in the eighth, and the fifth-year senior retired the Retrievers in order, picking up two strikeouts along the way.
The FAU offense finally rewarded the strong pitching by tying the game in the bottom of the eighth. The inning started with a fortunate break, though. John Martinez's pop-up to shallow centerfield was dropped by UMBC's Jesiah Carpenter. Martinez ended up on second base and subsequently scored on a high chopper off the bat of Eli Small that bounced over the first baseman's head.
THE FINISH
Boully preserved the 3-3 tie with another 1-2-3 ninth inning. He then worked around a leadoff single in the 10th to give the Owls a chance to walk it off for the second time in the series.
Perazza led off the 10th with a single and moved into scoring position on a successful sacrifice bunt by Brando Leroux. Martinez singled to move the winning run 90 feet away. With one out and runners on second and third, Small put the ball in play to the right side of the infield. Perazza broke for home and narrowly beat the throw to the plate to score the winning run.
