Owls Drop Midweek Matchup to FGCU

THE BEGINNING
FGCU (17-4) opened the scoring in the first inning. Three singles followed by a three-run home run gave the Eagles an early 4-0 advantage. The Owls responded with two in the bottom of the first. Kyle Boylston led off with a solo home run. Brett Patten later made it 4-2 with an RBI single through the right side.
THE TURNING POINT
The Eagles hit a pair of two-run homers in the third and fifth innings to lead 9-2. The Owls had a chance to cut into that deficit with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fifth. But a foul out followed by two strikeouts ended the threat with the deficit still at seven.
THE FINISH
The visitors added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to push the lead to 12-2 before a pair of consolation runs for the Owls made it a 12-4 final.
THE BATS
- John Martinez finished 3-for-5 with three singles.
- Patten reached base five times with two singles, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch.
- Boylston's home run was his second of the season.
- Michael Perazza recorded his team-leading third triple of the season.
THE ARMS
- The Owls used seven pitchers, highlighted by two perfect innings from Patrick Ward.
- Ward threw 21 pitches and recorded his first collegiate strikeout.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Owls host UTSA this weekend to open the American Conference schedule. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:35 p.m.
