BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball had its six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a 14-3 defeat to UMBC. The Owls and the Retrievers will meet for the series finale at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
THE BEGINNING
Florida Atlantic (12-7) starter
Kide Adetuyi and UMBC (7-7) ace Zach Robinson went toe-to-toe for the first four innings. Both offenses had opportunities, but both pitchers eluded any damage. The Owls loaded the bases in the first inning but came up empty. The Retrievers left runners in scoring position in the first, second, and fourth.
THE TURNING POINT
Adetuyi departed with a high pitch count after four shutout frames. Making his first relief appearance of the season,
Tyler Murphy conceded one hit and a run in the fifth before the FAU offense answered with a run in the bottom of the frame.
Nick Romano drove in
Marshall Lipsey to tie the game at 1-1.
After a scoreless sixth, UMBC broke out for a five-run seventh. A single and a hit by pitch sparked the rally. When UMBC's Dylan Melton dropped down a potential sacrifice bunt, Murphy opted to throw to third to get the lead runner. Nico Ong beat the throw, however, and the bases were loaded with no outs.
That signaled the end of the line for Murphy.
Brayden Gilson entered and issued a bases-loaded walk, a single, and a double to make it 5-1 UMBC.
Carson Kimball followed Gilson out of the bullpen. One more run would score in the inning on a passed ball. When the dust settled, the Retrievers batted around and scored five runs on four hits, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch.
THE FINISH
Walks and hit batters continued to plague the Owls in the eighth and ninth innings. FAU pitching issued eight base on balls in the final two frames. Despite recording just two hits in the eighth and ninth, UMBC added eight more runs to bring the day's total to 14.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach John McCormack
"We've played so well the last two weeks, and now we throw a clunker in there. It's bound to happen, but it's still disappointing. We had our chances early. Robinson was good for them. We had our shot but couldn't capitalize."
THE BATS
THE ARMS
- In his first weekend start, Adetuyi struck out three and walked three. He allowed three hits.
- The Owls used eight relievers after Adetuyi, with six of the eight allowing at least one run.
- UMBC drew 14 walks while striking out just five times.
WHAT'S NEXT
