ORLANDO, Fla. – A late rally was not enough for the Florida Atlantic softball team, falling to UCF on Wednesday evening by a 9-5 score at the UCF Softball Complex.
Runs came in bunches for both the Owls (12-6) and the Knights (15-4). While UCF opened the game with four consecutive runs, FAU responded with three of its own. The two teams continued to trade scores for the rest of the night, with the Knights ultimately coming out on top.
THE BEGINNING
The Owls fell behind early with the Knights drawing three walks and hitting a two-run double to go up 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
Graduate pitcher
Ainsley Lambert checked in at the bottom of the second and took control, retiring nine of the next 10 Knight batters.
THE TURNING POINT
Following a leadoff walk from redshirt junior outfielder
Kylie Hammonds, sophomore
Lily Holtje launched a two-run homer to right center to open Owls' scoring.
Later in the frame, a well-hit ball to centerfield from senior first baseman
Yani Guzman scored pinch runner
Lily Lowery to bring the game within one at 4-3.
THE FINISH
Back-to-back home runs from the Knights in the bottom of the fifth upped their lead.
The Owls had another rally in them in the top of the sixth when Holtje's leadoff double led to a fielder's choice RBI. A double by junior
Karson Davey then scored sophomore second baseman
Destiny Johns to trim the deficit to 7-5. UCF closed out the frame stranding FAU runners on first and third.
UCF answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
