BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (3-5) led No. 17 Miami (10-0) after eight innings on Wednesday but ultimately could not hold on in an 11-7 defeat.
THE BEGINNING
Miami scored first and led 3-0 after three innings before the Owls chipped away in the fourth. With two on and two outs, a routine pop-up off the bat of
Ian Collier to right field was dropped by Miami's Derek Williams. Two runs scored on the play, and Collier ended up at third after Williams airmailed the catcher with his throw home.
The Owls tied the game in the fifth.
Marshall Lipsey led off with a double to left center. In just his second at-bat of the season,
Eli Small lined a double down the left field line for his first hit and RBI as an Owl.
Owls' starter
Kide Adetuyi departed after five solid innings. Adetuyi set a new career-high in strikeouts with 10 while walking two and allowing two earned runs.
THE TURNING POINT
Miami regained the lead in the top of the seventh before the Owls responded with two in the bottom of the inning. First, it was
Brett Patten's line drive single up the middle that brought Lipsey home. Later, a chopper back to the pitcher's mound off the bat of
Xavier Moronta was fumbled by Miami's Packy Bradley-Cooney, allowing the go-ahead run to score.
Florida Atlantic added insurance in the eighth.
Patrick Ward drove in
Kyle Boylston with an RBI single, and
John Martinez eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-4.
Closer
Bryan Boully entered to get the last three outs for the Owls in the ninth, but the final frame didn't go according to plan. After retiring the leadoff man, a walk was followed by a two-run home run from Daniel Cuvet. Two more walks and an infield single loaded the bases before Brylan West delivered a double to score two and give the visitors an 8-7 lead. The Hurricanes weren't done either. After an intentional walk loaded the bases again, Jake Ogden cleared the bases with another double to make it 11-7.
THE FINISH
The Owls didn't go quietly in the bottom of the ninth. They loaded the bases with two outs on singles from
Michael Perazza and Boylston and a walk drawn by Martinez. Ultimately, though, a hard-hit ball by Lipsey resulted in a fielder's choice to end the game.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach John McCormack
"If you play baseball long enough, this type of thing eventually happens. It's a tough night. We played our butts off for eight innings. Kide [Adetuyi] was good; relief pitching was good. It's a shame that it fell on Boully like that, but it's part of baseball. Just have to move on."
