CLEARWATER, Fla. – Offense led the way for the No. 23 Florida Atlantic softball team as it finished the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational on Sunday with a 13-2 victory over James Madison.
The Owls (6-4) recorded their first victory in their second appearance in the prestigious tournament thanks to a season-high in both hits (15) and runs (13). The seven-run seventh inning against the Dukes (2-5) was more than enough to snap FAU's four-game losing streak.
Senior third baseman
Jesiana Mora shined at the plate, tying her career high with four hits and finishing the game just a triple short of the cycle. Freshman pitcher
Makenna Lee made the start in the circle and recorded her second career victory to improve to 2-0.
THE BEGINNING
Playing in the leadoff spot for the first time of the season, sophomore outfielder
Bella Foran recorded a single, scoring on the very next at-bat off the double from redshirt senior shortstop
McKenna Mulholland. Mora belted her second homer of the year, hitting in the third spot, to plate both she and Mulholland for a 3-0 lead.
Senior first baseman
Madison Inscoe added on before the top frame ended with a double to score sophomore
Lily Holtje and upping the score to 4-0.
THE TURNING POINT
Two walks and a hit loaded the bases for the Owls in the top of the fourth. With two outs, a two-run Mora double built the 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Dukes responded with a two-run home run of their own before a strikeout from Lee retired the side.
THE FINISH
Runs came pouring in for the Owls' offense in the top of the seventh, tallied by six straight hits including Mora's fourth of the game.
A two-RBI single by Holtje put 10 runs on the board. Immediately after, redshirt junior outfielder
Kylie Hammonds had the exclamation point a three-run blast.
